Newtown Intersection
A$600.00
The intersection of King Street and Erskineville Road sits at one of Newtown’s most historically charged points. This corner emerged as it was intended - a new town shaped by history that remains today: Bank Hotel, TownHouse Hotel, Court House Hotel and Newtown Station.
The real star of the Newtown intersection is the green corner block. Striking in green.
Turns out that was intentional. The buildings in Newtown feel dramatic because they were designed to be noticed - by the trams.
The trams closed in on this streetscape with four intersecting lines straddling the green - it was carved by four lines. To allow the trams to navigate the tight bend, corners of the green building and awning were cut back, façades angled and shopfronts coloured so they could be navigated safely from a moving tram. Intersections were widened and buildings angled or chamfered to improve sightlines. That’s why corners here feel dramatic - they are standing up straight in an effort to be seen.
